What are Chrome Multi Instances?
An average computer user has three different browsers installed; Chrome, Firefox and maybe Operamini. The reason for this may be that the user needs separate browsers for personal use, work and the third for guests using the computer.
Google Chrome has a feature that allows you to clone the browser in different instances. It works just like when you use two different WhatsApp on an Android device (not WhatsApp + WhatsApp Business).
Why you should have Multiple Instances of Chrome
There are many reasons why you could want to have multiple instances of Chrome on your computer. Here are some of the benefits below;
Multiple Chrome Browsers
If you love the chrome browser so much but you have other browsers installed, you can ditch the other browsers and create multiple instances of Google Chrome.
Having different types of browsers add up to your computer disk space and may make your computer system slow.
With the chrome multi-instance feature, you have one browser in different forms.
Separate Google Profiles
Once you install a Google Chrome browser, you will be asked to log in with your Google account. When you log in, your passwords, browsing history and autofill will sync across other Google chrome browsers logged in to that Google profile.
If you have different Google profiles, you can log each one of them to different Google chrome instances.
This way, your work history, passwords e.t.c will not come up on your personal profile.
Keeps your Organized
You do not have to install both your work and personal Google chrome extensions on a single Google chrome browser.
With multiple instances of Google Chrome, you can install different extensions and addons on each of the browsers.
Most times, other people get to use our computers to access the internet. This is risky because Google chrome has an inbuilt password manager that saves your username and passwords for different websites.
Someone else could have unauthorized access to your emails, social media accounts etc.
There are also private websites that you may not want other people to see; when someone else types the first letter of the domain name, Google chrome will auto-completes the website URL.
These scenarios can be avoided when you have multiple instances of Google Chrome on your computer.
How to Run Multiple Instances of Google Chrome
There are three different methods to do this. We will start with the best option.
Add a New User to Google Chrome (Best Option)
When you add multiple users to Google Chrome, the browser creates a clone for each user. The cloned version will act as a different browser entirely.
Step 1: Download and install Google Chrome if you do not already have it on your computer system.
Step 2: Open the Google Chrome browser and click on the profile icon.
Step 3: Scroll down and click on Add.
Step 4: Assign a name for the new Google profile.
Step 5: Select any icon of your choice.
Do not untick “Create desktop shortcut”
Step 6: Click on Add to create a new chrome instance.
Step 7: Sign in to the new chrome account if you want to. If you created this chrome instance for guest users, you do not have to sign in.
Cons: This only works on a computer. It does not work on smartphones or tablets.
Install Chrome Canary
Chrome canary is the experimental or development version of Google chrome. It is also called Chrome unstable because you might experience some issues while using it.
In Google’s words, Chrome Canary is the “Nightly build for developers”. Developers use this version of chrome to create nextgen websites and test-run Apis.
You can install this version of chrome and use only the features that you are familiar with.
You can have both the widely used public Google chrome and the Chrome canary installed on your computer.

Cons: Chrome canary is not stable. Sometimes you could experience performance issues.
Pros: You can download Chrome canary on your Android device. Chrome canary is not available for iOS.
Install Chrome Beta
If Chrome Canary is where Google experiments with new features to introduce, Chrome Beta is where they allow the public to test the new features before they are finally introduced into the stable version of Chrome.
In a nutshell, Google chrome has three different versions; stable chrome (most popular version), Chrome canary (unstable chrome) and Chrome Beta.
Chrome Beta is for users who want to test new features before they are added to Chrome stable.
You can download all three versions of chrome on a single device.
Incognito mode is also known as private browsing. When you browse with incognito mode, the browser does not save your browsing history, passwords and cookies.
You can allow guests using your computer or mobile device to use the incognito mode instead.
To switch to incognito mode on Google chrome, follow the steps below;
Step 1: Open your Google Chrome browser.
Step 2: Click on the three dots at the top-right corner.
Step 3: Select new incognito mode.
You can also use the Ctrl+Shift+N shortcut to access the incognito mode on Google chrome.
The new window will look like the image below.
This is the most popular option used by most people but it’s not the best route because the password you have saved on chrome/Google can still be accessed through the incognito mode.
The best option is to either create a separate chrome profile, download Chrome Canary or Chrome Beta.
